Machining centers: Versatile solutions for industrial production
Machining centers are high-precision machine tools that combine various machining processes such as milling, drilling and turning in a single machine. They are used in numerous branches of industry and enable efficient and automated production of workpieces made of metal, plastic, wood and other materials.
Types of machining centers
There are two main types of machining centers: vertical and horizontal models. Both types usually have a computerized control system (CNC) that enables precise and programmable machining.
Vertical machining centers
In vertical machining centers, the spindle is aligned vertically to the workpiece support surface. This makes work such as milling, drilling and thread cutting easier, especially with flat or complex workpieces. They are particularly efficient when processing large, heavy or complicated workpieces and are used in metal, plastic and wood processing as well as in the production of furniture and aluminum profiles.
The basic principle is simple: the processing head moves around the workpiece on at least three axes. There are models with movable or fixed columns - in the latter case, the column moves sideways depending on the machining requirements. Well-known manufacturers of vertical machining centers include Mazak, DMG Mori, Haas, Okuma, FANUC and Chiron.
Horizontal machining centers
Horizontal machining centers are especially designed for large-scale production. Their spindle is arranged parallel to the workpiece support, making it easier to machine the workpiece from several sides. They offer advantages such as better chip removal and more efficient use of machining time, as several workpieces can be machined at the same time.
These machines are particularly popular in the automotive, heavy engineering and petrochemical industries, where large and complex components are manufactured. Horizontal machining centers have movable tools that move in at least three dimensions and offer adjustable cutting depths. Due to their complex design, they require regular maintenance. Leading manufacturers include Doosan, Stama, Matsuura, Mori Seiki (DMG Mori), Makino and Comau.
